Chapter 5

It was a pretty old heart that had been cherished. My next concern was for more snobbish reasons. If Cassius is unlucky enough to die, Claudia will have nowhere else to go. The family of the Earl of Jaylen was obscure. Not only did he return his title, but almost all of his property was disposed of. This is because the collateral blood relatives raised their voices and claimed their share and took it away. During that series of processes, no one took care of Claudia’s property. At the time of her parents’ death, she was twelve years old. Because she was so young, her parents hadn’t drawn up a will leaving their property to Claudia. 

Because the parents were still young and so was the daughter, they thought they would at least live until they saw their grandchildren. So, what could be called Claudia’s share was quickly scattered, leaving only one. It was a diamond mine in the Earl of Jaylen’s estate. 

‘But I don’t know how to deal with it. I don’t know.’ 

If you just sell it, you will be able to sell it. However, it would be difficult to get the price that corresponds to the value of the mine. Diamonds were of great value. But digging it up also costs a lot of money. It has to be quarried, processed, and distributed, but the top line has already been dismantled.

 So, it was a lot of pressure for Claudia to start all these businesses. It was because she only had real estate called a diamond mine and had nothing in kind. It was also the reason Douglas kept his engagement to Jaylen. On the surface, he took care of Claudia as ‘loyalty to his deceased friend’, but in reality, he was aiming for a mine owned by her. In fact, the mine was currently under Claudia’s name only, and all business was being run by the Marquis Werner. The status of the ‘Lady of Earl Jaylen’ was just a good facade. She knew her situation very well. 

She always kept in mind that even receiving the least treatment in the society was because she would one day become the Marquis of Werner. 

‘But what if Cassius goes to war? So, if he dies, what will happen to me after that?”

The engagement period is only 10 years. There was no common sense of a new family that would accept her as a companion, with no wealth and strong family power. In the worst case, the best option for her was a convent. That would be worse than a marionette with a string off. Claudia’s eyes were dizzy at the thought that continued as if biting tail after tail.

‘I have to dry Cassius.’ 

Claudia quickly organized her thoughts and shook her head with strength. 

“Cassius. please tell me. I’m so sad, please listen. Even if you join the war, it won’t help.” 

Saying that, Claudia let go of Cassius’ sleeve and grabbed his arm. Tight as if you wouldn’t miss it. Then, an unexpected soft tone fell on Claudia’s head. 

“You are right. It’s not much help I guess.” 

Both Douglas and Claudia put on expressions of relief for a moment.
