Duke’s Painting Model - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
“Oh, you saw him. What are you talking about? Have you never heard of it?”
“What?”
“Among the people who modeled for the Duke’s paintings, there is no one who has quit. I heard that the person who modeled a while ago lost his hand while trying to seduce the duke. I think the former model said he was punished, but what was it?”
“…..”
Hearing Camilla’s words, Lillian’s expression hardened. It was a rumor that could not be heard outside the mansion. “Honestly, I want to tell you not to do it because I’m worried, but I’m afraid you need money for your mother’s medicine.”
“You can’t drastically deny it. If you’re going to do it, please take care of yourself. Understand?”
At her words, Lillian nodded slowly. The two exchanged greetings and parted in front of the kitchen door. After breaking up with Camilla, Lillian went straight to the fourth floor. ‘It’s because the previous models did something wrong. Because if I don’t do that.” You can earn extra money just by being a model. There was no reason to refuse. Not knowing whether the duke might be there or not, Lillian blindly climbed up and knocked after taking a deep breath. It was quiet as if no one was there, and soon the same voice I had heard during the day as I asked for permission, sounded.
Carefully opening the door, Lillian was greeted with a familiar sight. The Duke was drawing, sitting in the same space and in the same posture as when Lillian had seen him during the day. The only difference is that the candles are lit in many places. It was different.
“That…… Duke.”
“Have you already made up your mind?”
“Yes. Model, I will.”
“It’s good that your judgment is quick.”
“…..”
For a while, the silence between the two was filled with the sound of a brush moving over the canvas. It wasn’t even that loud, The duke seemed to be concentrating. He didn’t say a word to ask when to come or where to sit.
This continued to fill in the color of the painting. It was when Lillian, unable to bear the silence, parted her lips to say that it was late today and would come back and to let her know when.
“Should I hurry home right now?”
“Yes? Oh no. It isn’t so urgent…”
“Then take a seat over there. Because I want to draw a face right now.”
“Yes.”
Lillian went to the chair the duke’s brush pointed at and sat down quietly. But the duke paints did not paint her right away, then silence fell between the two again.
Lillian, who had been sitting and waiting for a long time, began to doze off without realizing it. She tried hard to stay awake because she was in front of a high- ranking person, but now her eyelids were the heaviest thing in the world.
My eyes, unable to bear the weight of drowsiness, kept falling down. Even then, the duke continued drawing the picture from before. “Wake up. You’d better go home,” Lillian, waking up in amazement at the words of the Duke, who had come closer.
“Ha, but I still have to work as a model…”
“What are you talking about? I’m sleepy so I don’t know anything. I drew all the parts to be drawn today.”
“….”
“Even if you take the pocket on the desk rock.”
The duke, having finished what he had to say, turned around and I sat back in the chair I had been sitting on during the day. Lillian walked over to the desk next to her, bewildered. There was a picture of her own face and a pocket full of gold coins.
“…”
Lillian, who looked at the picture as she picked up the pocket, couldn’t take her eyes off it and continued to look at her portrait. It was a picture that was drawn realistically, but it had a strangely warm feeling. That was all Lillian, who knew nothing about art, felt.
“It’s getting late, so I’ve prepared a wagon, so let’s get on it. It would be nice if you could come tomorrow too I guess.”
“Thank you. Then I’ll come again tomorrow.”
Lillian bowed to the duke who turned her back, grabbed her pockets, and left the room. There was indeed a carriage waiting outside the gate.
“Are you Miss Lillian? Get on board. I’ll drive you home safely.”
A waiting knight and coachman climbed into the carriage together. The carriage, which started immediately, arrived in front of Lillian’s house.
“Thank you.” The knight nodded in front of Lillian as he got off and got on the carriage again and went back. Upon entering the house, Lillian checked her mother’s condition, gave her some medicine, and quietly went into her room alone and opened her pocket. Inside was an amount of gold coins, equivalent to Lillian’s one month’s salary.
“This much?? I couldn’t help but be surprised. Even though she only came after dozing off, she was given such a large amount of gold coins that she was completely free from it.
“Nonsense.” Lillian muttered to herself and thought to herself. Apparently, the model fee was paid in advance. I don’t know how many more times I’ll do it, but tomorrow, and even after that, maybe even if countless days follow after that, I shouldn’t expect a pocket.
