Reborn As A Cripple - Chapter 14
I had a perfect score on the written exam. Even though I had won all the matches in the practical exams, I was still assigned to the bottom class, E-Class, instead of the S-Class.
…And even Laguna, who didn’t do well in the written exam but had won all the matches in the practical exam, was assigned to E-Class.
I had heard that practical skills were valued more than writing ability at this academy, and Laguna had to be at least C-Class or higher, which was weird.
…No, I understand. Laguna and I have that in common.
That our ‘Job’ does not look very good.
For example, Laguna’s ‘Crimson Wizard’ was considered relatively better than many other wizard jobs in [JRO]. Still, even so, the wizard profession is inferior to professions that mainly focus on physical attacks, such as ‘Knights’ and ‘Warriors.’
And although my ‘Farmer’ was unquestionably the strongest job in [JRO] because of its average stats, versatility, habitual free correction, and above all, the fact that it doesn’t have an upper-level limit and that one could become infinitely strong. It was still considered the ‘Weakest’ and ‘Lowest-Class’ job in this world due to its nature of being a late bloomer.
“Everyone, you may all be worthy in your own right in that you have been accepted into the Hero Academy, but this class where the dropouts are gathered especially is the lowest class in the Hero Academy.
You guys need to understand that and work hard with humility and dedication”
I was thinking about a lot of things as I listened to the unmotivated and wildly dressed homeroom teacher of E-Class.
“Hey, isn’t he the Marquis’ child prodigy that they’ve been spreading rumors about?”
“I heard that he was disowned”
“I saw that. Marquis Dukehardt was so angry that it was so scary”
“Seriously? But how did he get into this school? Wasn’t he a ‘Farmer’?
“Who knows? I heard that he was Princess Reyna’s ex-fiancee, so maybe she had something to do with it? I don’t know”
While dismissing the buzzing gossip of his classmates.
“Hey, Heid. What did he mean by this is the lowest class? I, for one, can’t believe that Heid is at the bottom of the barrel! I don’t get it”
“No, I don’t think it’s right that Laguna should be assigned to the lowest class either”
“I agree. But what’s with the homeroom teacher here? Suddenly making a fool of us about being at the bottom of the pile. I don’t like it. I bet Heid is stronger than that teacher!”
The seats were free and open, so the seat next to mine naturally went to Laguna.
That Laguna would sneak up next to me and say something like that.
Incidentally, the teachers at this school were at least 30 levels above and likely stronger than I am at present, so I didn’t want to say too much about that.
…It pains me to say that I’m weak, so I won’t say it.
However, I still didn’t like this treatment one bit, even though I got a perfect score on the exam and proved my ability. Moreover, it seemed to me that if ‘Farmers’ were treated too lightly, it would be a major obstacle to regaining my engagement with Reyna.
…To confirm that, I’m going to go directly to the person in charge of this school after I’m done greeting the E-Class.
◇
“I’m not convinced that Heid is in E-Class! He was much better than me in both practical and written exams, you know?”
“Well, even if you say that…”
When I went to the headmaster’s office to talk to him directly, I found that there was already someone there before me.
“…Reyna”
“Heid…”
I didn’t think Reyna would have come directly to the headmaster first. The school’s headmaster seemed quite troubled by Reyna’s protests, who was the princess of the country.
“You there, I’d like to talk to you later”
“Uh, ok”
On the contrary, Reyna directly said to me, “I’m coming with you!” who was more interested in Laguna who came with me. I would have to explain this later. I felt a little heavy at the thought of it, but whatever the case—
“Headmaster. I would like to ask… is ‘Farmer’ such a terrible profession? I think it has the potential to be a very good profession, depending on the status of the candidate, since there are no quirks in its compensation, and it shows the status of the candidate as it is”
“I see”
The headmaster looked at me with a difficult expression and answered in a mysterious way.
“To be honest, I think ‘Farmer’ is by far the worst of all the professions in the world. As you say, the lack of quirks means the lack of benefits. So, Sir Heid. Since you are a ‘Farmer’, I was going to reject your admission as having no qualities of a hero.
“Understood”
“However, Sir Heid is the only student at the school to get a perfect score on the written exam, and even beat Lady Reyna, who I thought to be the strongest of all the new students, on the practical exam”
“Pe, perfect score?! …Even I the runner-up, scored 430 in five subjects…”
As expected of Heid… muttered Reyna, who looked surprised and a little lonely.
“Of course, this is only possible now that he has just acquired his profession, and I am sure that if he continues to improve his skills, the difference in his profession will one day reverse his abilities. But I have never seen a person of such high ability become a ‘Farmer’ before”
The headmaster may also be aware of examples of a ‘Knight’ outperforming higher-level professions such as ‘Sword Saint’ in that area.
“Therefore, I chose Heid. I was curious to see how strong a ‘Farmer’ like you could be. Of course, I still think that ‘Farmers’ are weak, but I also think that you have the potential to become a hero even as a ‘Farmer’. Besides, this academy conducts an examination twice a year—each time the semester changes—to reassign the students to different classes”
“In short…”
“This school is a place where people of all ranks, families, talents, and professions can come to learn and grow together. This school does not treat people equally regardless of their status, place of origin, talent, or profession. Because I think that all of them are part of a person’s ability.
However, I am not so much of an old geezer as to corrupt those who have an ability by being caught up in these things”
“So, you are saying that there is a place in this school where if we prove our ability, we will be acknowledged?”
“Mhm. I have high hopes for you, Heid”
The headmaster then sat down on his chair.
“Thank you very much. I will do my best”
I bowed to the headmaster with a bow of a Japanese, not the bow of a typical nobleman.
Both Reyna and Laguna nodded their heads in agreement with my words and their eyes seemed to be full of trust and expectation.
…No, well, I just wish it was.
And so, after leaving the headmaster’s office and walking for a bit, Reyna opened her mouth.
“By the way Heid, can you introduce me to the beastman over there?”
Th, that’s right.
Because of the circumstances, my stomach hurts but I should still explain. I am planning to marry Reyna in the future after all—
