Reborn As A Cripple - Chapter 6
At [JRO], right after the tutorial was over.
In this world, the moment you turn fifteen, or more accurately, in the third month of the year you turn fifteen, you could get your first [Job] at the church.
The date of the so-called [Rite of Employment] was exactly today.
“Heid, today is the long-awaited day of the [Rite of Employment]! I was so nervous that I could hardly sleep last night.”
“That’s, I was also the same.”
Seriously, my eyes were wide awake because I was having so much fun and couldn’t sleep because of it.
Reyna would probably get ‘Dragon Knight Princess’ if [JRO] was right.
But I’m… a person who had not appeared in [JRO]. I don’t know what my [Job] would be until I open that door. And that’s what I was looking forward to.
What would my first career be like?
[JRO] was physics heavy, so it’s best to go for a swordsman who was fierce on offense, a knight who was fierce on durability, or a warrior who was somewhere in between.
But I’ve been working on my magic, so I could at least hold out for an offensive magic job.
Spellcasters and monks were not good. I’d have to be supportive, which was something I never want to be, but this was something I could only pray for.
But it should be okay.
[JRO]’s [Rite of Employment] was the beginning of the event where one [Job] was randomly given out of more than a hundred different [Jobs], but the chance rate for getting a support type was set to low.
Also, although I haven’t tested it, it seemed that the jobs given in the job search were based on the actions taken in the tutorial.
I’ve been training to be a hard hitter, so I was sure I could be an attacker.
Leveling efficiency drops considerably when a support role was taken. It was so weak that even the strategy guide recommended rescuing spellcasters and monks when they appeared.
“I’m sure you’ll have a great [Job] Heid.”
I don’t know. I don’t think I’d be able to build my first career in a job that surpasses ‘Dragon Knight Princess’. I’ve hit the maximum for my [Growth Rate], and I’ve even raised my level as high as I could. I’ve done all I could do for now.
“That’s for the goddess to know, isn’t it?”
In this world, unlike in [JRO], you couldn’t reroll. And yet, for once today, I had to pray to the goddess to give me a job.
◇
“Princess Reyna Hermenea. Your job is ‘Dragon Knight Princess’.”
Woah, the audience erupted.
Traditionally, [Rite of Employment] was held at Jobrec Church.
I, the eldest son of the marquess family, and Reyna, the princess, got our jobs at the ‘Hermenea Royal Capital Branch of the Job Recruitment Church’, but Reyna, the highest-ranking of the nobles who would turn 15 this year, was the first to receive a job.
Honestly, I don’t think there would be a better job this year.
A job so strong that some were in awe of it, some look up to it, and some envy it.
A first career was just that, a first career, but it was also an event that would have a significant impact on your life in a way.
If you could attract a strong job there, you could be sure that your future would be promising.
“Heid! I did it! I’m a ‘Dragon Knight Princess’!”
“Well, congrats.”
“Huh? There’s not as much reaction as I expected.”
Well, I already knew Reyna’s job at [JRO].
The only thing I could think of was, “You got your job just like that huh”, and that’s why my reaction was inevitably dull.
“Heid Dukehardt.”
As soon as I said that they called my name.
I’m the eldest son of a marquess family. I’m the third most prestigious of the 15-year-olds who were here today for the [Employment Rite]. If Reyna got a job, I would be right after her.
“That’s the marquess’ ‘Child Prodigy’, as they say.”
“Yes, or he may acquire a more formidable job than Lady Reyna.”
“So, I guess the only thing he will have is ‘Hero’ or ‘Brave’?”
I heard the gossip of the nobles whispering in the background. ‘Heroes’ and ‘Braves’. Some people took up that job on their third career or so, but it doesn’t seem to be very strong in the early stages because it’s hard to level up and each skill consumed too much MP.
I’d like to see a level 30 ‘Ninja’ who could learn [Annihilation], which adds 5% instant death to normal attacks, or a level 25 ‘Zealot Warrior’ who could learn [Absorption], which heals 3% of the damage done to the opponent, but most attackers were strong enough to hit anything they want, so anything was fine.
Well, my job is—
“Sir Heid Dukehardt. Your job is… ‘Farmer’.”
When the Archbishop announced this, the whole place fell silent.
‘Farmer’. A ‘Farmer’. Not bad. Not bad at all!
The ‘Farmer’ was a job that has a very small correction to physical stats except for agility, but unlike other warrior jobs, it didn’t have a negative correction to magical stats or agility.
Perhaps [JRO] wanted to recreate a realistic medieval world, but it was also a common job that has a threatening 40% chance of being obtained in the first career job gacha.
Skills and magic were not that bad, and above all, unlike other jobs, ‘Farmers’ didn’t have a level limit. (A/N: In case you’re wondering, the limit for ‘Heroes’ and ‘Braves’ is 100)
Therefore, the average [JRO] cripples often took the route of becoming a ‘Farmer’ again at the end of the day after leveling up through various jobs, and I was naturally a ‘Farmer’ in my main account before I died…
“Fo, fool! I’ve misjudged you, Heid!”
Algeo’s shout echoed throughout the cathedral where the church’s [Rite of Employment] was being held.
“What the hell is a ‘Farmer’ of all people? As a nobleman, as a marquess, to take such a lowly occupation would bring shame to my father!”
“Eh? No, what?”
It’s the world that [JRO] was based on, and 40% of the entire population’s first career was a farmer, right? Besides…
“Fa, father. What are you upset about? It doesn’t matter if you’re a ‘Farmer’. All you have to do is raise your level and change jobs.”
“Change jobs? What are you talking about? It’s a job given to you by the goddess! You can’t just change your job!”
“What?”
Seriously? I turned my eyes to Reyna, and she told me in a whisper, “I’ve never heard of that ‘Career Change’ either.”
What? You can’t change jobs? That’s what I thought of when I heard that. Come to think of it, ‘Career Change’ in [JRO] was content that you had to pay for. And this world was real. You can’t just pay the management company in Japanese yen.
When it came to it, it sure was a close call! If I hadn’t pulled a ‘Farmer’ with no level cap, I wouldn’t have been the strongest!
What? You mean there’s a 60% chance that it would flop? That’s too risky…
But there’s one more thing I can’t figure out. It’s that Algeo was angry, and the rest of the nobles were sneaking around sneering at me with cold eyes.
If there’s no job change system, then the ‘Farmer’ was a jackpot.
It’s true that when you’re a low-level ‘Farmer’, you may feel inconvenienced by the low correction value and the rather small repertoire of skills and magic, but even so, once you start to exceed level 100, the correction value was no longer important.
“That’s right.”
While I was wracking my brain, Algeo said to me,
“You’re disowned, Heid! I will not allow someone as lowly as a ‘Farmer’ to bear the name of the proud family of Dukehardt, which has been handed down from generation to generation.”
“You’re right. Heid. If you’re disowned by the family, you’re no better than a commoner without a family background. And I have no intention of giving my beloved daughter to a mere farmer. And as of this moment, your betrothal to Reyna is annulled!”
As if to add on to Algeo’s words, the King of Hermenea also continued.
Disownment? Breaking off the engagement?
I didn’t know what these meant. I was upset and confused, but I looked at Reyna. Reyna kept her head down and decided not to talk.
I didn’t know why.
However, because of my [Job] as a ‘Farmer’, I was disowned by the Dukehardt family, which meant that I lost my food, clothing, shelter, and most importantly, my engagement to Reyna was broken.

A/N:
This is the end of the prologue!
This is a story about a former [JRO] cripple named Heid who became a ‘Farmer’, the lowliest and weakest job in this world.
