Winter Hunting - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
This was a small town located in the mountains.
Most of the villagers were hunters or woodcutters. And women were making a living by making and selling handicrafts. Grain was obtained mainly by trading with handicrafts, fur and meat.
The hardest time in the village was spending days during winter. Even if they went hunting, it wasn’t easy to find prey. Sometimes, competition with other villages would occur and they would be busy stealing each other’s prey. That’s why, in winter times, aiming guns at humans rather than animals was not very surprising.
‘It would be nice if I could enter the Snowy Forest’.
Everyone in the village thought that they were banned by the Duke because there were many beasts in there that could be made into expensive leather.
But in fact, the whole forest was owned by the Duke, so there was nothing unfair about banning them from entering the forest during that period. Still, what they normally enjoyed was limited, so now the villagers were on the verge of going a little crazy because of this winter.
–“Give me some health pills! I’m going hunting!”
Recently, People who live by taking blood were now on bind, so they were on the verge of taking a break for the last few days. They were struggling for nothing, while some of them were drunk and keep screaming in front of Ariste’s house.
Because of it, Ariste couldn’t even sigh and had to stay up all night.
In particular, this year had a poor harvest, and the price of grain also doubled compared to the previous year, making the situation even worse.
The whole town was visibly angry. As an “outsider”, she had to lay low even more. For eight years, despite the passage of time, she was still treated as an outsider.
“Ariste, we have to survive here. So, we have to feel grateful for just being accepted”, her father always said. It’s almost been a year since her father passed away. Ariste has been working as the village healer on behalf of her father. Although she wasn’t a well educated doctor, she was able to do quite well with her medical herbs.
It was very important to be a useful person in the village. There were also many other people who also dug medical herbs, but no one was more knowledgeable in pharmacology than her.
Ariste knew where the herbs grow in the middle of the winter, and also knew about herbs that others didn’t know about. Ariste used this knowledge quite efficiently.
She was well aware that as long as she played an indispensable role in the village, she would not be kicked out.
As she entered the village, there was something different from the usual scenery. Originally, there weren’t many people walking outside during this season. It was because there was no reason to come out to face the biting blizzard, especially since the weather is even more cold these days.
Even though they had little food, they all hated wasting energy doing something useless. So, it was definitely weird seeing people huddled together outside.
