Winter Hunting - Chapter 6
Chapter 6
“It looks like, even in cold weather your hands did not stop working hard to dig out herbs that grow in the snow.”
“Everyone is like that as well.” It’s not like she was a noble that her hands should be smooth.
Women in Vito village also farmed while men went hunting. Or they will make clothes and craft using fur, skin and horns of the beast caught by their husband and son.
But their hands were not even as rough as Ariste’s hand, who had no way to farm as they do, and had to dig through the frozen soil with her hands to collect herbs. In order to make a moisturizing oil for her pale hands full of blisters, she’d have to use animal oil and had to get milk. Both were even more valuable in winter than the scarce prey.
“It’s okay.”
Ariste pulled her hands from Mrs. Reed. Such kindness was unfamiliar. The nature of the people in this village wasn’t very nice and kind, but it wasn’t just for a year or two.
Even when they came to her, the only pharmacist in town, for treatment and medication they never really said thank you.
So she felt strange. With a smiling face more than necessary, she came to her house and said she was worried about her out of nowhere.
Looking at them, Ariste saw the face of the village chief standing behind Mrs. Reed. The Village Chief whose hair and beard was all white, was always stern and was a man who would not easily change his expression.
He was a man who lived for peace and prosperity of the village from his young age, until now.
In fact it was unusual for him to accept an outsider like Ariste. However, since he was fully supported by the villagers, everyone gave in according to his opinion.
That’s why he was a benefactor for Ariste as well. Nevertheless, she never felt comfortable with him.
“You are here, Chief.”
“Let’s go in and talk about it. It’s cold, even if the heavy snow has stopped, it looks like it will snow again.”
Mrs. Reed laugh loudly and grabbed Ariste’s hand. The village chief, who was standing like a rock, moved his body and walked towards the two. Ariste climbed the stairs without a word and opened the door to the hut.
“I don’t have much to serve.”
The cast-iron pot where the soup should be boiling was empty for seven days. A couple of pieces of bread that are all cold were placed around the oven every month.
“I am entering.”
“Oh my God, what is this?”
Mrs. Reed looked inside and pulled her tongue out.
“You should have asked for anything you need, We are not others.”
“Fortunately, I got some potatoes that I had stored. Thank you.”
Mrs. Reed went through the basket Ariste was holding, she found the sprouted potatoes and frowned
“I will give you everything I have been drying, I can bring you a few more. I can give you more weight than these.”
Ariste’s eyes open wide towards Mrs. Reed. Handing out something to eat this winter…for the unusual kindness, her vigilance took precedence over gratitude.
“It’s a waste to be in a place like this.”
“Hey.” Mrs. Reed spoke out of the blue and stroked the hair that had protruded out of the hood.
“You are the prettiest in the town. All eyes of the men in the village were captivated.”
The hand that was sweeping down along the line of her face was strangely creepy. She instantly shook off the hand.
Mrs. Reed looked at her as if she was just a little embarrassed, then raised her hand towards her face.
