The bride of the white night - Chapter 22
A bitter smile spread across Caleb’s lips. “Well, not yet.”
It was a silly thought. He lightly placed his lips on Aisa’s. And whispered softly. “I’m sorry.”
Then, after putting Aisa on the bed, he left the bedroom. Aisa thought blankly. What is wrong and what was that ‘I’m sorry’? It was full of the unknown. Aisa couldn’t sleep until the next morning. She spent the pure white night with open eyes.
Staring intently at the box containing the platinum key that her husband had left behind.
There was only one meaning to her by a husband who left it behind. Caleb had no intention of annulling the marriage.
Even if Aisa betrayed him before they got married, he have no intention of driving her out or abandoning her. It was such a sweet expression that Aisa could not easily accept it. She had doubts because this was what he had so desperately wanted. ‘Is my interpretation really correct? Maybe he misunderstood his intentions on purpose?” But even after thinking and pondering all night, there was no other conclusion that could be reached.
To Aisa, Caleb and Ainar people were like sweet candy given in front of a starving child. It’s something she had been longing for so much, but it’s something she couldn’t easily accept. It was something she desperately wanted, but it was even more frightening because it was something she had never had in her life. Aisa was thirsty for affection and favor, but she had never held it in her hand. Being cursed from birth as a bastard, no one had ever shown Aisa a word of kindness. Growing up in utter isolation and abandonment, Aisa learned to give up love before she craved it.
However, her husband, Caleb, and the affection the people of Ainar were pouring out made Aisa afraid before she was pleased.
‘Why are you giving me this kind of affection?” It was enough to make her self-sacrifice beyond fear. “Do I deserve this kind of affection?”
What happened in the middle of the wedding procession made her even more withdrawn. Before accepting affection, she was just repeating that she did not deserve it, because she was afraid of being abandoned later. While turning away from her husband’s tender hand.
After that white night and dawn, when the bright morning finally arrived, Aisa managed to gather up her courage. ‘Can I show my greed? Is this me?’ Hesitating several times, Aisa stretched out her hand and opened the box. A box with a platinum key inside. As if answering her question, the key was shining brightly.
“Oh my God, what a vision. How did you get such fine skin like this?”
“You must have had a good night. How come you have such a good expression?”
The maids and servants chattered around Aisa like little birds. It was their jobs to help the mistress’s face wash and grooming. This was, in fact, their main duty and joy, but after the wedding, Aisa was almost always lying in bed, so the maids had only dreamed it in their head and could not realize that wish. But this morning they came to attend and as soon as they entered the bedroom, the Grand Duchess was up the first.
